Who We Are

About ACS-Affordable Cleaning Services

We at ACS-Affordable Cleaning Services are a family owned business. We have been in the cleaning industry since 2001 and personally in business since 2013. We have lived in the Iowa City area since 1997 and consider our employees family. Because of this relationship, ACS can proudly boast that the majority of our employees have been with us for three years or more whereas the national cleaning service average time to retain an employee is three months. Loyalty of employees, management, and clients (or as we refer to them, “Friends with needs”) helps to create higher morale and a noticeable increase in productivity. This relationship also increases productivity and morale for our clients as they are free to focus on their other duties and dreams.

We don’t just work in the community; we encourage our employees to be part of it, finding ways to serve others outside of work. ACS has participated in the University of Iowa annual Hawkeye Homecoming Parade winning best community entry every time we entered. We have developed relationships with community organizations such as the Iowa City Shelter House, Goodwill, and the VA, giving an opportunity to those who may need a chance to prove themselves. So, if you are looking for the best, look no further. ACS and their team are ready to help you with all your cleaning needs. Whether you need a residential clean, moveout/move-in cleaning, private individual, property manager, landlord, realtor, small or large office building, post construction, ongoing or one time services, you can count on ACS.

Our Mission Is Simple

Our goal is simple. Our goal is to ease our clients’ minds and free up their time by providing cleaning services that allow them to pursue those things most important to them.

Meet The Team: ACS

All of our staff, from our owner and including the entire staff is lovingly called Team ACS. We meet frequently to discuss anything and everything to determine how Affordable Cleaning Services can serve our customers better. Many of our best practices have come from these meetings/picnics/get-togethers.

In a business that is known for its turnover of employees, Team ACS has a core group of dedicated employees who have been with us for three or more years. This gives our clients the benefit of having their spaces cleaned by experienced individuals that are familiar with their particular needs. As you grow and develop, so do we, always looking for better ways to serve you.

It’s Midnight. Our fingers trembled as we hovered over the mouse and pushed the button to launch our new ACS website, Stay Clean My Friends.

We’ve been working hard on this project for a long time. The main reason for the site is to make it easier for you, our clients and potential customers, to discover the services Affordable Cleaning Services offers to make life easier for you. Many of our clients tell us our services help them find time to pursue more important things than deep cleaning their kitchen is.

Some of you have mentioned keeping your home in tip-top shape is like a second job. It takes time away from people, friends and family, who you want to spend time with. House cleaning takes time away from the things you’d rather be doing. If ACS cleans your home, imagine what you could do with the time…

Our New ACS Website, Stay Clean My Friends is also designed to make it easy to contact us from any device. On a mobile device, it’s almost like using an app.

Touch our phone number (on most smartphones and tablets) and you phone app should open up with our number ready to call.

There are contact forms on most pages so you can email us right from the page. You get a confirmation right on the page when you email has been sent.

We hope you like the changes we’re making for you. We happen to think they’re pretty darn cool (but hey, we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far).

If there is anything you’ve seen that we could add, let us know and we’ll consider it.

We do want to know if having a way to schedule and pay for your cleaning online would be helpful for you. Please contact us to let us know if you believe you would use a service like that.

Tips For Homemade Natural Cleaners

expand_more

Here’s How You Can Make 67 Homemade Natural Cleaners at Home.

Everyone loves a product that works great, but no one likes the overpowering smell that comes along with many store bought chemical cleaners. Thanks to Erin O. for writing this post for the website, Keeper Of The Home.

Erin makes an important point in her post. You will save money and time when you use these recipes, but most importantly, you control the mixing of these natural cleaners. Because of that control, you can eliminate many of the toxic chemicals so prevalent in the major brands. (more…)

How To Make A Cleaning Schedule That Works

expand_more

cleaning schedule 1

Maybe you have a hard time keeping your home clean. I did. I never used a cleaning schedule. The big things things got done, but overall, my home stayed dirtier than I felt comfortable with.

I tried several strategies to attack the dirt, but none of them ever worked out for my family. Determined to find a way that works, I set out on a quest to find the best method for staying on top of chores.

I tried every suggestion I came across. Finally, I sat down with my family and created a workable cleaning schedule. My family was not excited, but now we are all happier and our house stays cleaner.

Here’s how to make your own cleaning schedule…

The first step is to make a list of all the areas that need to be cleaned in your home.

note pad-1.1

Next, break each room down into small chunks.
Then assign each area to someone

note pad 1.2a

Once you have that then you can break down how often
each task needs completed (daily, twice a week, weekly)

note pad 1.3

Finally, write or type up your list and post it
where everyone can see it

Cleaning Schedule 5

The children in your home get their own, age appropriate, list. My kids have a schedule
for the summer that includes daily chores. This list must be completed before any of them
can watch TV, play video games, or get on the computer.

I also recommend making a schedule for each season as your home’s cleaning needs will change with the weather.

Keeping Your Carpet And Upholstery Fresh Between Cleanings

expand_more

One of the biggest cleaning offenders in the home is dust. You can’t see it, until it settles all over the place. You can spend your days walking your home like a french maid with a feather duster keeping your surfaces clean, but what you don’t see is the dust and dirt that settles into your carpets and upholstery.

I’ve read that it’s recommended you get a new mattress every six to eight years because of the build up of dead skin, dirt, and dust! We all think “yeah, but I keep my bed clean so mine must not be that dirty”…

But even a bed that looks clean can be teaming with thousands of dust mites and ounces of dead skin cells. This not only weighs down your bed but encourages the spread of dust mites and bacteria.

There are many small things you can do to help reduce the amount of junk that ends up in your mattress and furniture. Here are a few of the ways I have learned to keep my furniture cleaner.

Clean Up Spills Quickly!

We all do our best as adults to clean up any spills on our furniture or carpets quickly. The faster you get to it the less that soaks in. But when tragedy strikes you can take some simple steps to keep it from getting worse. Always blot up liquids as fast as possible, do not rub that will just push it farther in. Pour a thick layer of baking soda over it, this will help soak up any remaining wetness and pull odors. Make sure to let this sit for an hour before vacuuming it up. If a stain remains you can always pour lemon juice on the spot, agitate it with a firm brush, and blot it up.

How to Reduce Smells

There are several ways to keep the fabric on your furniture smelling fresh. Most of us would spray it down with Fabreze and forget about it. Products like that can be expensive and only mask odors.

Getting your carpets and upholstery cleaned regularly will reduce dust, dirt, and bacteria. We can’t all clean our carpets daily and who would want to?

Between cleanings I maintain freshness by dusting my bed and couches with baking soda. I like to add some essential oils to mine, not too much or it will clump! I let it sit for at least an hour, then i vacuum it up. This leaves my unwashable fabrics smelling great and helps keep them odor free.

My final step is to spray everything down with vodka. That’s right… I said vodka. The alcohol content is strong enough to kill bacteria that might be growing under the surface. It also does a great job of reducing smells from dirt and sweat. And don’t think you need to go big for this one, any cheap vodka will work!

Change Sheets regularly and vacuum

This may seam like a no-brainer but, changing sheets regularly and keeping them washed is the first step in keeping your bed clean. Also, taking a vacuum to your couches, chairs, and mattress keeps debris from getting smashed and ground into fabric.

Have Carpets And Furniture Professionally Cleaned Regularly

The carpet experts at Affordable Cleaning Services recommend you have your carpets and furniture cleaned 2-3 times a year.

Professional cleaning can remove dust, dirt, and bacteria from your furniture and beds better than you can.

Regular cleaning will reduce the need for new mattresses and furniture.

Sanitizing Your Sponges

expand_more

I have thrown out hundreds of sponges because they have gotten nasty and moldy. They sit around and collect bacteria that deposits onto your dishes. No one wants that. Taking a few simple steps can extend the life of your sponges. Keeping them bacteria free and smelling great.

Squeeze Them Out!!

Getting as much water as possible out of your sponges will help them dry faster giving bacteria less time to grow.

Give Them Space To Dry

We all want to just throw them by the sink and forget about them. That gives the sponges time to ferment. The best trick i’ve found is to take a binder clip (these can be purchased anywhere from the dollar store to walmart) clip it onto the sponge and use the clip to balance the sponge so the water can drip down.

Put Them In The Dishwasher

This will allow the sponge to sanitize. The heat dry will allow the sponge to dry quickly and the heat will minimize bacteria. This will lengthen the life of your sponges.

Put It In The Microwave

This is similar to the heat dry on a dishwasher. Start by soaking the sponge in vinegar for five minutes. Squeeze out the sponge leaving as much liquid as possible. Place in microwave and set it for 3-5 minutes. You can always add time if the sponge hasn’t dried yet. I recommend doing this in 30 second increments.

Soak In Bleach

I’m not a fan of bleach but this method works very well. Soak the sponge in a solution of bleach and hot water.

Use Your Washer

You can throw your sponges in the washer. I like to add mine to rags so they don’t mess up any of my clothes. Use hot water, and add one cup of vinegar to your regular soap. Do not add them to the dryer. This is harmful to sponges and causes them to break down quickly.
